Department of Prosthodontics
The Department of Prosthodontics was established in 2017, with Ministerial Decision no. 25209/2017 (GG 692 7-3-2017, issue B), following the merging of the following Departments:
(a) Department of Fixed Prosthesis and Implant Prosthodontics [established in 1971 by Royal Decree no. 413/1971 (GG 126/24-6-1971 issue A) under the name Department of Fixed Dental Prosthesis, and renamed Department of Fixed Prosthesis and Implant Prosthodontics in 1997 by Ministerial Decision no. Β1/437/1997 (GG 993/7-11-97, issue B)]; and
(b) Department of Removable Prosthodontics [established in 1959 by Legislative Decree no. 3974/1959 (GG188/7-9-1959, issue A)].
The Department of Prosthodontics belongs to the School of Dentistry, Faculty of Health Sciences, of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Its primary objective is to serve research and educational needs in the following subjects:
1) Fixed Prosthesis and Implant Prosthodontics
2) Removable Prosthodontics
3) Dental and Craniofacial Bioengineering
Mission – Purpose – Areas of Activity
The Department of Prosthodontics has the following mission:
1. To cover research and educational needs at the undergraduate and postgraduate level for the Department, as well as for other AUTh Departments, on subjects that fall under the Department’s subject areas, and form part of the curriculum.
2. To train (in theory and practice) specialised scientists in the subjects covered by the Department, and as provided by law.
3. To pursue collaborations in any form with research centers and academic institutions in Greece and abroad, provided that their objectives are the same, consistent with, or complementary to those of the Department.
4. To organise scientific lectures, seminars, symposia, conferences and other scientific events; to publish papers and books; and to invite both Greek and foreign scientists recognised for their scientific excellence.
5. To provide services in accordance to the provisions of PD 159/1984 (GG 53/issue A/27-4-1984): “Conditions for the provision of services by university laboratories to private individuals and to entities of any legal form”.
6. To provide expert opinions (e.g. in court, etc.) on issues related to its subject areas, according to current legislation.
7. To collect, process, store, and distribute research data.
8. To undertake projects and studies of a consulting or developmental nature, towards the goal of meeting society’s needs.
9. To publish scientific journals.
The areas of activity of the Department of Prosthodontics include the following subject areas:
1. The subject of “Fixed Prosthesis and Implant Prosthodontics” covers at least one autonomous subject area of the Laboratory and includes the development, implementation and assessment of scientific restoration methods using conventional fixed prosthetic restorations, combined prosthetic restorations, and prosthetic implant-supported restorations in patients of all ages; clinical physiology and pathology of the stomatognathic system; Occlusion; Craniognathic Disorders; and the materials for reconstructive, restorative, and regenerative applications.
2. The subject of “Removable Prosthodontics” covers at least one autonomous subject area of the Laboratory and pertains to the development, implementation and assessment of scientific methods of restoring appearance and function with conventional removable and implant-supported restorations, on patients of all ages with partial or complete edentulism or with Oral and Maxillofacial defects, for the purpose of improving oral and overall health. It also includes the materials for reconstructive, restorative, and regenerative applications.
3. The subject of “Dental and Craniofacial Bioengineering” covers at least one autonomous subject area of the Laboratory and pertains to the development, implementation and assessment of scientific clinical and laboratory methods for prosthetic treatment of patients with partial or complete edentulism, for the restoration of dental, oral and craniofacial defects based on the principles of Tissue engineering, Genetic engineering, Bioinformatics, Biodiagnostics, Bioengineering, Biotherapeutics, and Biomimetics.

Postgraduate Program in Prosthodontics
The Postgraduate Program in Prosthodontics originates from the Department of Prosthodontics and belongs completely to the School of Dentistry of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The Postgraduate Programme in Prosthodontics includes teaching and clinical practice on fixed and removable prosthetic restorations, implant prosthodontics, perioprosthetics, management of craniomandibular disorders, and maxillofacial prosthodontics.
The program consists of six semesters, starting in the fall semester of each academic year. Postgraduate students are required to complete the program’s clinical and research requirements by the end of the third year. However, an extension may be granted if deemed necessary. Coursework and clinical practice are combined, in order to provide conditions that are scientifically challenging at every level of the Prosthodontics Program, as well as to encourage active participation both in research and in lectures. Courses in related sciences includes biomaterials and dental materials, the biology of implants, occlusion, biostatistics, biomechanics, and periodontology.
The second and third years of the program are purposefully less burdened by courses, to allow the students to meet their clinical requirements. The program leads to a “Postgraduate Specialisation Degree in Prosthodontics” that meets the requirements of the European Committee on Prosthodontics Specialisation and corresponds to a Master’s Degree in the Science of Dentistry. The program prepares laureates for their practical specialist training or for a career in dental education. To be awarded the Specialisation Degree in Dentistry, the Postgraduate Student must also complete an acceptable, following relevant examination, Master’s Thesis, in addition to the theoretical and clinical training in the prosthodontics specialisation.
It should be noted that the program’s official language is Greek; foreign nationals participating in the programme may complete their Master’s Theses in English.
