Department of Basic Dental Sciences

  • The Department of Basic Dental Sciences was established in 2006 and it is located at the Mandalidion Center for Dental Research which is situated adjacent to the main building of the School of Dentistry.

    Main objective

To offer theoretical and practical courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level in Dental Biomaterials

  • Material testing can be performed including quality control, characterization, analysis and biocompatibility testing in cell cultures. Material characterization, physical and mechanical properties as well as determination of organic and inorganic material constituents is conducted by utilizing state-of-the-art equipment including Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP), Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometer (GC/MS), UV-Visible Spectrophotometer, Optical Profilometer and Microscope.

The Research and Quality Control Units apply a Quality Assurance System according to the European Standard EN ISO 9001/2000 and they are dedicated to meeting high standard expectations by providing technical expertise in the area of quality control and materials development. Technical assistance may also be offered for the development of specific testing design, protocol formulation and reporting data.

The Department of Basic Dental Sciences offers the above mentioned research possibilities to individual scientists and/or academic institutions aiming to implement their research protocols and utilizing its facilities and scientific staff. Acceptance of the submitted research protocols requires full compliance with the guidelines of the Committee of Ethics of the School of Dentistry, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

The Department of Basic Dental Sciences is a university section and a non-profit organization. Therefore, upon the receipt of the test protocol, calculation of the material and functional costs for the implementation of the proposed project will be made and the individual scientist(s) and/or academic institutions will be informed accordingly. A contract between the Department Basic Dental Sciences and those whose research protocol will be materialized must be signed before the initiation of the cooperation.
